About Me

Note: As of December 14, 2015, I will be at Google in Cambridge, MA.

I create new interactive systems, tools, and experiences by mixing human-computer interaction (HCI), design, and elements of machine learning (ML), information retrieval (IR), and crowdsourcing. See Projects and Publications for examples.

Startups/Companies

I have also founded/co-founded two companies, the most recent being WatchPop, a company focused on delivering content to smartwatches (co-founded with my PhD student, Adam Fourney, and Kent Lyons). We were honored to be a winner of the Pebble Timeline Challenge for our software.

Former graduate students of mine, and countless students in my HCI classes, have founded their own startups.

Funding

Funding for my research work has been generously provided by NSERC, NCE GRAND (where I was a Principal Network Investigator), ORF, a Google Focus Award, EPSRC, and a Leverhulme visiting professorship award.

Awards

In 2012, I was honored to receive the Instructor of the Year award from MathSoc.

Academic Background

I received my PhD from Georgia Tech's College of Computing, under the supervision of Beth Mynatt, a Master's from Florida Tech, and my Bachelor's from Cornell University.
